Every late spring I buy a lavender plant. I hate to cut the flowers off because the bumble bees love them so much but this morning I decided it was time. With each snip the bees grew more upset. When the last stem was clipped they buzzed away. I cut the stems down as far as possible so the bush will grow new shoots. Next I wound elastic around the stems and went downstairs to the unfinished part of the basement and hung them upside down on a pipe with a string. I'll forget about them for a few months. When dry the seeds pretty much fall off the stems. I like to make sachets for my drawers and put a handful in a decorative dish and leave them in the kitchen and bathrooms. The scent of lavender is supposed to be calming. I can’t vouch for that but I love growing and drying it and then being able to use it in so many ways around my house.
After that I decided to make my summer blueberry cake. The last few containers of blueberries I bought were small
and tasteless. I almost didn't buy them yesterday at the grocery store but they were big
and plump.

This is the best of summer! I'll be making this a lot!
I'm going to serve it tonight with vanilla ice cream.
